Introduction
by Fachtna O' Mahony, Partner

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the Spring’18 Newsletter.

It’s been an interesting and busy, indeed hectic, first quarter at Quintas. Having conducted some research into the relevance of our Newsletter, the indications are that while the technical pieces are regarded as relevant and informative, there is tremendous interest in the opinion pieces and the softer storyline articles. With that in mind we are endeavoring to strike a balance between the two to create a Newsletter that interests you at some, or different levels. In this edition our highly regarded Receptionist Siobhán, has contributed a very interesting and insightful article on the challenges, experiences and emotions of a parent returning to the workplace after taking time out to raise her family. We also have articles on getting prepared for GDPR with the implementation date imminent, alternative sources of Finance and changes to how Revenue deal with underpayment of PAYE.

At Quintas we are continually reminded of our Corporate and Social Responsibilities as an organization. Our Partners are heavily involved in various Charities such as Cork Simon, Irish Guide Dogs, Special Olympics, Down Syndrome Ireland etc. Our Social Committee are also very active in this regard regularly organizing fundraising events in which the entire firm participate. Recently we held “The Great Quintas Bake-off” as a fundraiser for Marymount Hospice. It was won by yours truly (with significant help from my mother). This improvisation on my part was referred to as cheating by my colleagues but it was all in good fun and we are very proud to have raised funds to donate to such a deserving charity as Marymount. I would encourage anyone in the workplace or in a position to influence such activity to do so as it has been very gratifying and rewarding for us all at Quintas. We have other such events planned throughout the year thanks to the sterling work of our Social Committee.

On a business level the common theme amongst our clients seems to be how busy they all are, with some not experiencing the fruits or rewards of their efforts just yet. The economy is performing well with solid growth but the rising tide isn’t raising all boats equally. I’m sure in time most will feel the benefit of their endeavor despite the many challenges we all face.

At Quintas we encourage our clients to challenge their business models to ensure they are optimizing their returns on investment. As the business owner you know most about your business, but it is healthy to occasionally take time out from the day job for the “helicopter view”. We are available to assist in a meaningful way to facilitate a strategic review of your business. We do not profess to have all the answers but we can certainly help you to debate the issues, challenge your thinking and help to redirect the business if required.

Enjoy the read and as always your feedback is most welcome.
