Introduction
by Fachtna O'Mahony, Partner

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter, as each edition season or quarter passes we become increasingly excited and optimistic that the improving economy will bring some level of benefit to our clients businesses or reward for persevering and surviving through the recession. There is plenty of evidence now of a general improvement with most economic indicators turning positive. Exchequer returns are ahead of target, employment is growing, property prices rising, confidence is returning and practically all economic forecasts are for our economy to grow in 2014 - 2016 at varying levels.

Challenges remain however as most commentators are forecasting a further fall in interest rates during the summer as the ECB tries to manage inflation close to 2%, good news for tracker mortgage holders, but the reason this and other quantitative easing measures are introduced is to guard against deflation which is a concern in Europe as the economies in the larger countries remain static.  At home our banking system remains a major concern and this continues to act as a brake on the economy with the majority of SME's reporting a serious lack of funding and credit. In my opinion the greatest threat at present to the recovery of the SME sector and by extension our economic recovery is the banking system. It would be a difficult enough challenge for businesses to recover even if we did have a properly functioning banking system but in the absence of this it is proving to be an enormous task for business owners and managers with significant amounts of time and energy being spent on an aspect of their business which should function or operate with far less input from the SME owners allowing them to focus their efforts elsewhere.

As always we use the newsletter to inform readers about issues that may be of interest or importance to them based on topical issues at present. In this edition we address compliance issues for the charity sector, we look at revenues more aggressive approach to the child minder industry and we examine the insolvency legislation. We're also introducing the latest tax saving opportunity via Film Relief and informing readers of the latest round of funding from Cork Foundation.

If I or any of my colleagues can be of assistance to you don't hesitate to contact us on 021 4641400.
